But on a dating app, the cover is all you have! Your first photo is what will make someone decide whether or not to read further. And often, it\u2019s <em>all <\/em>they\u2019ll see since so many people swipe first and only read profiles once they\u2019ve matched with someone. Use these dos and don\u2019ts to get more people scrolling down before they swipe left!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-do\">Do<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>keep other people out of your first photo. Your potential matches want to know who they\u2019re swiping on! I don\u2019t care how good you look &#8211; it won\u2019t matter if no one knows who you are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"6596\" height=\"4397\" src=\"https:\/\/cityswoon.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/shutterstock_1850354170.jpg\" alt=\"Image of a profile picture on a mobile phone.\" class=\"wp-image-1867\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-don-t\">Don&#8217;t<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>wear a hat or sunglasses in your first photo. These can be okay in later photos, but your first photo should be full face. And on that note\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-do-1\">Do<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>crop your first photo to basically a headshot: head &amp; shoulders only. People want to see your face! Let\u2019s not make them zoom for it. Because honestly, they won\u2019t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-don-t-1\">Don&#8217;t<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">use emojis or a marker to cover other people\u2019s faces. If you don\u2019t want them in the picture (and trust me, you don\u2019t want them in the picture), crop them out! Otherwise, all you\u2019ve done is draw people\u2019s attention to that other person and away from you!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-do-2\">Do<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>give me a full, toothy grin in that first photo. I hate to tell anyone to smile, but you want someone to see your photo and imagine the smiles you\u2019ll have together. Besides, research shows that a smiling face is more attractive! However, it\u2019s important that it\u2019s a genuine smile. Do you have trouble smiling in photos? Try this: start pretending to laugh. You\u2019ll feel silly, but eventually you\u2019ll start <em>actually <\/em>laughing and get a great photo.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"6720\" height=\"4480\" src=\"https:\/\/cityswoon.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/shutterstock_1896812593.jpg\" alt=\"Young woman looing at her phone with profile pictures of men surrounding her from dating sites\" class=\"wp-image-1869\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-don-t-2\">Don&#8217;t<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>have any photos of you and a member of your target demographic. It doesn\u2019t matter if you caption it \u201cme and my brother\u201d &#8211; many people won\u2019t read that caption and just assume it\u2019s you and an ex. And if it <em>is <\/em>you and an ex? What are you doing??<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-do-3\">Do<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>make sure all your pictures are in focus. If it isn\u2019t high quality enough to be crisp when blown up to an entire phone screen, it doesn\u2019t belong on your profile!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-don-t-3\">Don&#8217;t<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>forget to check what your photos look like after you upload them. Different apps have different ways of cropping photos, with many cropping to a square in the middle of your photo unless someone clicks into it. Use the app\u2019s profile view tool to make sure you\u2019re happy with how it looks!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-do-4\">Do<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>include photos of you doing an activity you like, especially if it\u2019s unique! This is also a great opportunity to use a full body picture while still communicating something about who you are. Photos with activities are much more likely to get engagement!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-don-t-4\">Don&#8217;t<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>show other people\u2019s children (especially if you don\u2019t have express permission). Your kids are your call, but there are other ways to show that you\u2019re family-oriented than exposing your nieces\u2019\/nephews\u2019 faces to the internet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-do-5\">Do<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>remove all obvious filters from your pictures. Everyone knows what the Snapchat dog filter looks like &#8211; we don\u2019t need to see it over your face!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"5608\" height=\"3738\" src=\"https:\/\/cityswoon.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/shutterstock_1896812581.jpg\" alt=\"Young man looing at her phone with profile pictures of women surrounding her from dating sites\" class=\"wp-image-1870\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-don-t-5\">Don&#8217;t<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>include a group photo unless it says something about you. You and your friends hiking the Grand Canyon? Great, you\u2019re outdoorsy. You and your friends posing in front of a wall? Not great&#8230;it\u2019s you and a wall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-do-6\">Do<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>include a video if the app you\u2019re using allows them. Data from dating apps themselves indicates that videos get up to 10x more likes than photos! Pick something fun (like an activity) for extra engagement. No videos you like? No problem. You can turn a live photo into a gif!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-don-t-6\">Don&#8217;t<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>include photos that you\u2019re not in. This sounds obvious, but based on the profiles I\u2019ve reviewed&#8230;it\u2019s not. Want to show off your dog? Take a photo with him! Want to showcase a great meme? That\u2019s what your Instagram story is for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-do-7\">Do<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>have fun with it! Consider switching around your pictures every so often to give your profile a fresh feel and also get a sense for which ones are working best. Take note of which photos get the most comments or likes and consider moving those closer to the top.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most of all, remember that your profile is only a snippet of who you are. Your photos should be just enough to make someone think, \u201cwow, I really want to get to know that person\u201d &#8211; so they\u2019ll match with you and get to it!
